Shattered Screen

Kinisis smashed the small screen to pieces, then dropped the pieces on Kairos’s lap.

“That was uncalled for…” Kairos tutted, sweeping the broken screen up. “I was just showing you potential futures that we avoided.”

“I didn’t want to see any of that!” Kinisis snapped. She immediately got up from the pile of cushions that made up her seat and summoned a thin silk wrap to cover herself up. Clearly, the Allmaker didn’t want to stick around, she wanted to get away from Kairos and his alternative futures as soon as possible.

“It is important that you know about these!” Kairos sighed. He had gone to great lengths to not just record these alternate futures in a way that other beings could see them. But Kairos had also spent a lot of time arranging a comfortable place for Kinisis to view these alternate futures exactly so she wouldn’t immediately freak out.

“Whyyyyy?” Kinisis yawned. “They’re horrible and icky and that’s why I made you, to filter out these bad futures so I don’t have to face them. Because many futures are absolutely terrifying!”

Kairos sighed some more. “You don’t understand, Kinisis. I am showing you these ones for a reason. Normally an alternate future no longer becomes possible after various events pass, but in these cases, these futures are still possible.”

Kinisis stopped trying to get away. She turned back to Kairos, a hint of worry in her diamond-flecked eyes.

“Arkedetelos is a genuine threat?”

“Yes. That’s why I showed you that particular future.”

“Even though we have Arkadin subdued right now?”

“Yes.”

The Allmaker hesitated, then sat back down in front of Kairos. “How could Arkedetelos come back?”

“In every future I saw, Arkedetelos came back because Arkadin lost his mind. He lost his sense of self, his personality and was reduced to… basically an animal. And when Arkadin becomes an animal, his desire to eat takes over and he starts consuming the universe, the way a Corruption would. The reason why that doesn’t happen with Arkadin is that he is consciously aware of what he does and has defined emotions. He is capable of controlling his hunger where as a monster cannot!”

“Hm…” Kinisis put a delicately painted claw to her lip. “So you are suggesting that the current drugging of Arkadin could make him… hungry?”

“That is exactly what I am saying!” Kairos hissed. “What you are doing could trigger what I showed you!”

“Huh…” The Allmaker fell silent. “So, uh… what… what do you want me to do?”

The Whenvern paused. He didn’t think Kinisis would actually… listen. “You… you understand the seriousness of this threat?”

“Well, Arkedetelos is a bad thing. If you think there’s a chance we could have another wolf problem and the consequences could mean me dying, then maybe it’s worth listening to you.”

“Wow…” Kairos continued to stop and start talking. “I… I didn’t think you would listen. The thing is… I don’t really know what to do. Keeping Arkadin drugged is not helping matters though, and… I don’t know what you’re doing with his friends but that’s probably not helping either…”

“So… I should just let Arkadin be?”

“Uuh, no…” Kairos warned. “Basically… I don’t know. All I know is that drugging him is bad.”

Kinisis shrugged and smiled. “Maybe we need a family meeting then. Get everyone in on this. Get everyone’s thoughts on the situation…”

Before Kairos could say anything, Kinisis teleported away, presumably to start preparing for the upcoming family gathering.
