Babysat

“I know you’re there, you two…”

Arkadin sat up, nudging Kairos with his elbow as he did so. The two deities had been lying in the long, silvery grass, staring off into the night sky. With their godly eyes, they had watched a new sun being born, a new species rise up, two races going to war and new life slowly coming into existence on a long forgotten moon. It had been a peaceful night. So far.

“How?” Yisini asked. Both Yisini and Epani had taken strange forms. While they had kept their normal colours – purple, black and silver for Yisini and red with glowing orange and green spots for Epani – they had both taken the form of a Skyavok. The same forms that Arkadin and Kairos were using. “How did you sense us?”

“Because you’re so obvious?” Arkadin tutted. “What do you both want?”

“We came to check on you, little brother!” Epani smiled a toothy grin. She was enjoying being a Skyavok far more than Yisini was. Yisini seemed to be struggling to walk on two legs.

“Uh, sisters…” Kairos muttered, shaking his head and silently trying to tell them to stop and leave. “There’s no need for you to be here.”

Yisini finally managed to straighten herself out. She put her hands on her hips, hissing. “Says who? Why do you get to have all the fun babysitting Arkadin?”

“I…” Kairos stuttered as he clambered to his feet. “I’m not babysitting Arkadin… I’m just spending time with him…”

“And keeping an eye on him at the same time!” Yisini exclaimed, stumbling as she approached Kairos and Arkadin. “You’re having all the fun as well! And you’re trying to bed him!”

This time, Kairos replied immediately and sternly, draconic wings and blue flames sprouting from his body. “I am not! How dare you make such outlandish claims! Sure, I may be keeping a bit of an eye on Arkadin but I am not doing anything aside from that!”

“I was under the impression we would… either leave Arkadin alone or take turns minding him?” Epani asked. “Spreading the load equally?”

The Whenvern turned back to Arkadin, who hadn’t really said much. “Arkay, I’m… sorry… We should have… maybe run this by you first?”

Arkadin sighed. “I’m not angry. I’m just disappointed. It’s like you three don’t trust me.”

“I don-” Yisini was about to loudly shout, but Epani covered her mouth. They all knew what she was going to say though.

“Yeah, and I get that. But I went and shed my skin, I went and tore myself apart and put myself back together again in the hopes that you would trust me. A bit more at least.”

“That is why we are following you though!” Epani was at least trying to be nice and cover the fact that they had all been spying on the Thantophor since he’d resurfaced. “We were very worried about you, little brother. What I saw… when you tore yourself apart and I found your remains, it was very upsetting!”

“Exactly!” Kairos explained further. “We want you to be well! And we don’t know what’s going on in that little head of yours! So I decided to take some time and spend it with you to make sure you were well! And that… kinda evolved into me genuinely enjoying spending time with you.”

“And now I want to spend time with you too!” Yisini interrupted again. “You’re all having fun and I want in!”

Arkadin tutted. “But I am enjoying being with just Kairos. I’ll… I guess I have to spend time with you later…”

“You do not have to spend time with anyone!” Epani smiled. “We just want you to be happy.”

“Well, Epani and I do…” Kairos almost laughed.

Yisini was not at all amused though. “You’re all such pricks. Why are we even taking Skyavok forms anyway? What the heck are you all even doing?”

Arkadin shrugged. “We’re being mortal.”

“But we’re gods!”

“We have forever to be gods, we don’t have forever to be with mortals. Or at least, I don’t…” Arkadin trailed off, looking up and down at both Yisini and Epani. “You know what? You two actually look really good as Skyavok…”

Epani blinked. “Thank you?”

Yisini though started to smile. “I just had a brilliant idea…”

“What’s that?” Kairos asked.

“We should go and confuse the fuck out of these poor Skyavok. Just wander into popular places and buy all their things and eat all their food and join all their parties and otherwise be silly.”

The other deities all looked at each other.

“Sure?” Arkadin shrugged. “Sounds like fun.”
