Cells

Yisini stared intently at the small glass plate on the counter, hesitating before placing the plate under a microscope. For once, the Allbirther felt like she was on to something, on the right path to her goal.

After a moment of correcting the zoom levels, Yisini finally got a good look at the sample she had been cultivating. On the plate were various large cells, just too small to actually see. However, among them, one cell had become cancerous and prone to mutating. It was this cell that Yisini was keeping eye on.

As for the other cells, they didn’t seem to notice at first. But as the cancerous cell grew larger, various white blood cells clustered around it, creating a wall of antigens. Once the antigens were finished being produced, they all closed in, sealing up the cancerous cell, almost crushing it to death. Finally, the white blood cells began to consume the remains of the cancerous cell, leaving no evidence of it actually existing.

Out of curiosity, Yisini decided to add one more cancerous cell onto the plate. Everything repeated itself, with the cancerous cell being crushed and consumed. This time though, the whole situation repeated much more quickly. The white blood cells immediately noticed the cancerous cell and neurralized it.

A small smile slipped across Yisini’s face. She moved the plate, then began setting up another slide for the microscope. However, this time round, Yisini added several more cancerous cells, cells which were trying to attack the other cells around it in an aggressive manner. To Yisini’s surprise, although detection of the malignant cells was slower, the antigen creation and the consuming of the cancer cells was just as fast as the previous slide.

Pleased with the result, Yisini set up three new rounds of testing, but with different sorts of cancerous cells. A timer was added for each new test, counting the time for each sort of progress. The cancer cells this time were bigger and even more aggressive, looking to attack any cell, includinb the white blood cells. What Yisini saw this time round was very interesting. Although some white blood cells were killed in action, the cancerous cells were at least contained. The antigens being created could travel fast enough to surround the more aggressive cancer cells, bringing the cancer takeover under control and isolated away from otherwise healthy other cells.

Feeling more confident, Yisini created a third new experiment. This time though, there would only be one white blood cell, being set against a cancerous mass of five corrupted cells.

Needless to say, the one single cell did not last long. It was outnumbered. What was surprising though was that the white blood cell managed to kill two cancerous cells and neuter a third.

Yisini blinked a few times, giving herself a moment to rest  her eyes. She then ran the previous experiment again. One white blood cell verses many cancerous cells. This setup was then duplicated five times, each one counting how many cells were taken out before the cancer took them. A net positive, with all white blood cells destroying at least two cancer cells before dying themselves.

Satisfied, Yisini rubbed her eyes, then started clearing things up. As she did so, she muttered one single word.

“Done.”
