Finishing School

Litvir stared at the piece of fancy paper they were holding. It was more of a scroll, but Litvir appreciated how the paper felt. For a moment, Litvir wondered if the piece of paper was as old as Litvir was.

About two hours ago, the graduation of Litvir’s year had finished. Every single young Rethan had been given a pretty leather satchel, containing a few bits and pieces, mostly paperwork, including a non-scroll-shaped final report card, a certificate of school attendance and a sheet of paper telling Litvir that they were no longer part of the 900th Legion, they had been “promoted” to the 800th Legion (the Legion of the Jobless), and a small booklet that contained a guide to joining a new Legion. Thankfully, Litvir knew that their time in the 800th Legion would be brief, because a Legion had already been assigned to Litvir, by the Master of Generals. Being a deity

There were two other things in the bag. One of them was a key with five key chains on it. This was a key for temporary accommodation. A fully furnished studio apartment. Apparently these homes were tiny, as they were a stop-gap between living in the 900th Legion barracks and having one’s own home. There were also several pre-paid cards for 4 months of basic needs that Litvir could use pretty much anywhere. Food, water, shelter and an upgrade to their online stuff, so it all worked faster. Either way, all the basic and important things were all covered.

Thankfully, Litvir’s temporary accommodation was in the capital city, on the outskirts. Sure, Litvir was abnormal and could travel at super fast speeds, but they were glad to be living in Phos, where Litvir’s adoptive parents also lived. It was a bit of a long trip (Litvir’s temporary place was on the opposite side of the city) but Litvir didn’t mind. Even without powers, Litvir knew where their adoptive parents lived, and public transport was always very good.

But Litvir’s little graduation satchel contained a little something extra. Two extras.

The first extra was Litvir’s 900th Legion belt, in yellow. It used to have one gold medallion on it, but now Litvir had three gold medallions. The first was for being the top of the class, the second was for getting excellent scores on their exams, and the third was for being in the top 1% of all current students of Litvir’s year. Litvir was very pleased with themselves, but also very surprised. They knew they were good and smart in their sub-legion, but out of the entire year? That was insane.

The second item was a white sash with a gold medallion on it. Litvir wasn’t wearing it currently, but the purpose of the sash was always to honour those who go above and beyond. Litvir clearly did, and they were awarded a sash for saving other students in the recent fires at Litvir’s school.

Pretty much everyone was amazed at how well Litvir had done in their short time in the 900th Legion. A lot of vok had been concerned about Litvir being very young.

Litvir was also very proud of themselves. But, more importantly, Litvir was going to have their own house soon. A home that Litvir could decorate however they liked. Yes, it was temporary housing, but Litvir would still be living there for a year or so. Once they were officially inducted into a Legion, Litvir would have the option to move elsewhere, probably into something larger or closer to work. But finally, just like all the other members of the Twelve Anew, Litvir would have their own place. No more having to sleep in weird places, no more having to keep everything in a single box, and the opportunity to shower whenever Litvir wanted.

It suddenly occurred to Litvir what they had obtained. Freedom. Litvir was no longer stuck in school. They were no longer stuck in a small dormitory. And they had a month off of school as well, since school was finished. Alright, Litvir still had godly duties to do, but that was fine, because they were no longer juggling god-work with school-work.

However, there was one extra thing that Litvir was looking forward to. Their friend Miisa, they were going to live in similar temporary housing on the same street as Litvir. Which meant they could still be always-friends. If Litvir was really lucky, and if Miisa kept up their hard work, Miisa would be in the 99th Legion, which worked in the same building Litvir would work at, in the 11th Legion.

Something nudged Litvir, snapping them back to reality. Admittedly, most people were already gone. Litvir was waiting for the bus that would take them to Phos. And, thankfully, the bus had just arrived. The person behind the nudging was one of Litvir’s teachers, Captain Tekni.

“Congratulations, Litvir!” Tekni smiled.

“Thank you…” Litvir smiled back. “Today was weird.”

“It was weird, but it was good-weird, yes?”

“Yes. Is this my bus?”

Tekni nodded. They then fished around in a pocket on their stomach wrap, and pulled out a small business card. “I am glad you are doing better now.”

“Thank you some more!” Litvir’s smile got bigger as they read the card. “Is this for if I want to do art?”

“Yes. My partner has an art and hobby club in Phos. When you are settled, why not pop them a visit?”

“I will, Kyr Tekni!” Litvir was beaming with joy now. But at the same time, they realized they needed to get on the bus. “I have to go now. Will you be in the hobby club sometimes?”

“Of course. We will see each other again soon. Go on. Go home. You deserve some rest.”

Litvir picked up all their stuff, waved to Tekni, then rushed off, getting on the bus. They quickly found an empty spot by the window, then relaxed a little.

However, Litvir wasn’t going to their new home yet. They had a few people that Litvir really really wanted to see, which meant getting off outside a familiar, cosy home.

“I cannot wait to see mama and dada…” Litvir mused to themselves. “They will be so happy…”
