Sudden Candidate

Eksi shuddered slightly as the room began to lighten up. Today was making no sense at all. Everything was cancelled, everyone was taking the day off to have fun and party. Some sort of celebration that Eksi had forgotten about yet again. But for some reason, just as he arrived at the Dessaron Arena where he worked, someone had left a note especially for him. Telling him to come to this dark, often unused office.

As everything became clearer though, Eksi couldn’t help but squeak. There was a massive, obviously female serpent creature in the room. It dwarfed both Eksi and the weird-looking Rethavok next to it.

“Hiya there!” the Rethavok beamed. “Sorry to abruptly bring you in here, but we have a great opportunity for you!”

“Uh…” Eksi hesitated. “What?”

The Rethan stepped forward, holding out his hand. They may have been small for a Rethavok, but they were still a good 40cm taller than Eksi was.

“My name is Kuta, I am, well, technically a deity, working in security and defence. But I will be retiring for a bit and need someone to replace me. According to Yisini’s list, you have been chosen as a potential candidate to take my place.”

Eksi hesitated, glancing around the room. Surely this was just some cruel joke or something, right?

“I… don’t get it.”

The serpentine being flicked out her tongue. “Kuta here is asking if you want to be a deity.”

“You can… make anyone into a deity?” Eksi was still very confused.

The serpent tutted, leaning forward. “Not anyone. You are one of the many beings that Kairos used to try and stop the Golden Army. After the universe was shattered, you had your memories wiped and were returned home.”

Eksi took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. “Why have you picked me?”

Kuta patted the serpent on the side of the head. “I think you are freaking him out, Yisini.”

Suddenly, everything clicked in Eksi’s head. Yisini, literally the Allbirther, the literal goddess of life and death, was offering literal godhood. To Eksi of all people.

“Alright, alright…” Eksi was still trying to calm down. After all, he was talking to Yisini, a vastly powerful being who could smite Eksi with ease. “You… you want me to be a security guard and a god?”

The Allbirther nodded. “Yep, that is exactly what I want. We’ve been narrowing down our list of candidates, and your name has come out since you are a Threanic being and also work in security. Almost exactly what we are looking for.”

“You also are the first candidate to not immediately faint in Yisini’s presence…” Kuta added. “Which is a good thing. Basically, you tick all the boxes.”

“Out of curiosity, how many beings have you checked so far?” Eksi couldn’t help but ask. He watched Kuta write something down on a notepad.

“Hm… Sixteen so far.”

“And they all-”

“Yep.”

Eksi sighed, letting the temptation in. “Can you… give me more… information?”

“Sure!” Kuta pulled out a small flyer which was covered in pink dust. He then handed the flyer to Eksi. “If you are genuinely interested, we will take you up and show you around.”

“But what about my work?” Eksi suddenly realized. “I have a job here that-”

“Do not worry, I’ll keep you covered!” Kuta smiled. “You let us know what you think.”

Eksi turned his attention back to the flyer, slowly scanning it. The writing was a bit weird, but he could read it no problem.

“You… weren’t kidding about the god stuff…” Eksi muttered. “This is… insane…”

“But good, yes?”

“Yeah…”

“Do you want to try it out?” Kuta asked. “See if it’s good for you?”

“You are willing to give me a trial?”

Kuta grinned. “Of course. We need to try you out before we hire you.”

“Can I… have some time to think about this?”

“Yeah, sure. If you want in, then come back here same time tomorrow and we’ll sort everything out! In the mean time, I hope you have a nice day off!”

Eksi smiled slightly, then backed out of the room feeling… a lot of things, but mostly excitement.

As the door clicked shut, Kuta turned to Yisini. “You didn’t… do anything to him, did you?”

“No, what sort of monster do you think I am?” Yisini flicked her tongue.

“Well…”

Yisini rolled her eyes, then changed the subject. “I’ll pick him up tomorrow and take him to Kinisis. You folks can deal with him from there. Just let me know if he needs some mind-cleaners, alright?”

“All good. Thank you, Yisini.”

“No problem,” Yisini uncoiled herself, then started to fade away. “See you tomorrow then…”
