The Alternative – Part 9

“YOU KILLED MY FAVOURITE DAUGHTER!”

Kenon’s roars of anguish echoed across solar system as the Voidborn erected harsh, electrifying barriers around it, trapping the Thantophor inside. He knew the barriers would not hold the Lord of Death, but that didn’t matter. An hour was all Kenon needed to destroy the vermin that had taken the life of his precious child.

The Voidborn’s antics though had so far done nothing but confuse Arkedetelos. The Thantophor didn’t really understand why this black and gold being was attacking it. As far as it was concerned, it was just something else to eat.

With another roar, Kenon began firing dark blades at the Thantophor. Each one that struck the beast dug deep onto the Thantophor’s skin and began siphoning away blood and power.

“YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR CRIMES!”

Arkedetelos stared blankly at the Voidlord, not sure how to react. It then ripped out the little blades that had dug into its body and continued munching through a planet, sucking up its methane atmosphere and then drinking the acidic oceans on the planet’s surface.

“WILL YOU NOT FACE ME?”

Kenon fired more blades at the Thantophor, and again the Thantophor just ripped them out. This time, they moved on to the next planet, destroying it in a blast of volcanic power.

“ARKADIN, MURDERER, FACE ME, YOU COWARD!”

His anger becoming overwhelming, Kenon threw himself at the Thantophor, slicing at the Death God with a myriad of golden swords and spears. This time, the Thantophor seemed to pay attention and attacked Kenon back, immediately clawing at Kenon’s arms. Kenon retaliated by pushing the Thantophor away.

“You fight like an animal. You always were a monster!”

Arkedetelos growled at Kenon, then turned its attention to the next planet it needed to destroy. Growing ever more furious at the Thantophor’s lack of care, Kenon grabbed Arkedetelos and again started slicing at the Death God, stabbing spears into the gaps in its armour. If the Thantophor was capable of feeling emotion, it wasn’t showing it. The Death Lord grabbed the Void Lord, then twisted around Kenon, ensnaring the Void Lord’s arms in black flames.

With a grunt of pain, Kenon broke free.

“And to think that I once cared about you.”

The Thantophor hissed, but Kenon knew it wasn’t because it cared about Kenon’s words. Drawing his staff, Kenon attempted to fire more draining darts at Arkedetelos, but the Thantophor simply flicked the darts away, then charged at Kenon.

Of course, Kenon immediately dodged to one side, but the Thantophor seemed to have gravity helping it. Using the last remaining planet of the solar system, the Thantophor twisted round and slingshot itself towards Kenon. This time, the Void Lord couldn’t get out of the way in time.

Again, the Thantophor grabbed onto Kenon, digging its claws into Kenon’s crystalline skin. Kenon attempted to wriggle free, but the more he fought back, the tighter the Thantophor’s grip became.

Then, for some reason, the Thantophor began to grow. Within seconds, the Thantophor matched Kenon in size. Using gravity against Kenon, Arkedetelos pushed the Void Lord against the last planet, shattering its surface.

“YOU’LL DESTROY US ALL!” Kenon roared as molten lava spewed across his back. There was a hint of panic in his voice. He was in genuine pain. His wrists were twisted, his internal skeletal systems were cracking as the Thantophor continued to tighten its grip. Was he… losing this battle?

Arkedetelos sneered, baring its teeth. In a single, swift movement, the Thantophor clamped its fangs around Kenon’s throat, then cleanly snapped the Voidborn’s neck.

Immediately, Kenon’s body fell limp. As the Voidborn’s body began to dissolve in the lava of the dying planet, the energy fields around the solar system dissipated.

With a grunt, Arkedetelos consumed the star, the remaining planet and the weird black and gold corpse, before continuing on its destructive path.
