A Day in the Life of a Kalsa Warrior

Hello. My name is Tahlak. I am a 57 year old former male Vohra. I work as a Kalsa Warrior for the Glenirik Nest on Vohra 3. I have been asked to write about my day, what I do from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep.

The Glenirik Nest is a large nest with multiple Kalsa Warrior groups. I am a member of the KU-Team and my main focus is in security monitoring.

Like all Kalsa Warriors, I work for 12 hours a day. I wake up at 5:00pm in the communal KU-Team sleeping chamber, I polish my armour, put on my Kalsa Warrior uniform bands and have breakfast with the rest of the KU-Team. We normally have a cold milowheat soup followed by whatever caffeinated drink we can lay our claws on. Afterwards I generally spend ten minutes checking my personal emails and sending private messages over the Olanet to my friend Lihlik, a Kalsa Warrior who lives in the nearby Horaok Nest. I then spend twenty minutes preparing myself a small packed lunch and fill up my drink dispenser.

We all have a five minute briefing at 5:55pm, and start work proper at 6:00pm on the snout. I work from three security ports on the northern half of the nest, overlooking the egg sites, the mining sites and our Queen’s chambers. Each security port is fitted with multiple screens that connect to a series of security cameras, and I spend my hours watching everything through these screens.

Because of how the nest has expanded, I have to split my time between each security port. Originally, there was only one security port for all three, but as the mine and egg sites expanded, more security ports were built. It is somewhat awkward for me, but I at least get some exercise as I travel from port to port.

The busiest time of day is at midnight. I need to be extra vigilant as I watch the changes in shift for the normal Vohra, switching between the night and morning schedules. I generally arrive at the mining site security port at around 11:50pm, as the mining site is the busiest, but I also switch some of the monitors in that security port to the egg site as well. Dehlok, the leader of the KU-Team, will post someone else to the Queen’s chambers security port for the shift, to me, but once the shift change ends at 1:00am, I am on my own again.

I tend to have my mid-shift meal at around 1:30am, to avoid the shift rush. It is always something I can put together while in a security port. I often make myself a soup in a mug. Occasionally, I am joined by my best friend Sarlok, who does on-site security patrols at the mining sites, assuming he is not too busy.

I spend the rest of my shift continuing to watch the monitors, switching security ports every hour. Rarely the Queen may request the KU-Team’s presence but that’s generally only at weekends when she makes her (admittedly rather boring) weekly speeches and wants a Kalsa Warrior team to stand with her.

Our shift officially ends at 6:00am, but we often find ourselves finishing at about 6:30pm, as we all have to write reports and hand them to Dehlok, who then has to summarize them for the Queen. Afterwards, I have a small meal with Sarlok and my other friends and Kalsa Warriors Heljik and Rohpak. Our post-shift meal is the only meal we eat that is solid. We have sitaki pancakes with plenty of Vohran honey. On weekends, we also treat ourselves to a small glass of non-alcoholic sitaki mead.

Afterwards, we are mostly free to do what we want. Sarlok and I enjoy playing electronic games, and are members of an online multi-species gaming community. We used to play competitive shooters with a Cassid and a Rethan but the Rethan kinda disappeared a while back. Sarlok also writes a fictional blog and I draw pictures for it. We are not allowed to leave the nest, so the olanet is the only means of contact we have with the outside world.

At midday, the entire KU-Team goes back to our chambers and we all go to sleep, to start our day again at 6:00pm.

And that is pretty much all I do. Pretty boring, yes?
