Bored Guardian

“Ugh, I am so bored…”

Relkir grunted as he sat by the window, idly tapping on the ultra thick glass pane. Outside, stars were forming, nebulae were blooming and a new universe was being born. This should have been a wondrous moment, but Relkir had seen it all before. It was all the work of various Life Goddesses, beings that were so insanely powerful that Relkir’s existence was nothing more than a pointless blip to them.

That being said, the reason Relkir was even there, staring out into nothingness, was because of a Life Goddess. Kinisis had taken him and eleven other entities, snatched them out of her universe and basically turned them into her own personal servants. Now, Kinisis was wandering around the omniverse, helping other Life Goddesses as they build their own universes.

But Relkir never took part in any of this. None of the ‘Twelve Guardians’, as Kinisis called them, did. They were Divine Guardians with one single duty: to protect Kinisis. A being that didn’t really need protecting. Sure, there had been a couple of events in which, yes, Kinisis had needed help. But they had all been issues with other Life Goddesses, that were far, far more powerful than any of the Divine Guardians were.

“You alright, Elkay?”

Elkay was Relkir’s old name. Back when he was a mortal, long before he was given so much… wasted potential. Sometimes Teekay, Relkir’s closest friend, would still call him his old name, but Relkir didn’t particularly like it.

“Not really, no.”

“I heard you say you were bored…”

Teekay was quite a bit smaller than Relkir. Each of the Twelve Guardians were originally different species, but when Kinisis… took them, she did something to essentially make them all the same in some way. Relkir used to be a member of a species called the Rethavok, but now? He was definitely something else. They all were.

“I am bored, Teekay. I feel pointless. Why are we even here when Kinisis does not really need us?”

“Well, she does kinda need us…” Teekay shrugged as he sat down next to Relkir. “Why would she make us the way we are otherwise?”

“I do not know…” Relkir sighed. “But we are servants to a being that can snap universes in and out of existence. Every single being we have met has been far more powerful than us. How can we fight back against other universe-creating and universe-destroying entities? I feel utterly useless”

Again, Teekay shrugged, not really having an answer. “You’re not utterly useless.”

“In terms of doing our duties, we are very useless.”

“We do other things though.”

“Like what? Ferrying the Life Goddess from place to place, when she can teleport?”

Teekay sighed, knowing there was truth to Relkir’s complaints. “I guess you’re right, but at least life for us is pretty easy now.”

“True, but I… I need some sort of stimulation. I am so bored when I am not on duty. And when I am on duty, I still get bored, because Kinisis does not really need protecting now.”

For a moment, Teekay just sat there, not answering. He then slowly inched towards Relkir, nuzzling up to him. “Well, I could give you some stimulation…”

Relkir rolled his eyes. “That is not what I mean.”

“I know…” Teekay smiled as he snuggled up closer. “But it’s better than nothing…”
