Dueling the Wolf

Normally, Volt didn’t accept random invitations. But today’s random invitation was from a familiar friend. Someone he hadn’t spoken to in a while. A normally very happy little Excalibur who often found himself stuck in the past. But as Volt accepted the random invitation, he realised all was not well.

“GO AWAAAAAAY!” Excalibur screamed as Volt’s landing craft dropped him off. “LEAVE ME ALONE! I JUST WANT MY CREDITS!”

Volt remained where he was for a moment, trying to examine the situation, but the chaos was a little too much for him. They were clearly on a defence mission on Ceres, fighting a bunch of Infested enemies, but apart from that, Volt was confused.

“You alright, Excalibur?”

Excalibur screeched again as he ran from behind a corner. Chasing him was a hulking goliath of a being, larger than even a Rhino and just as heavily armoured. It was carrying a massive hammer and was… howling.

“NOOOO! MAKE HIM GO AWAY!”

Excalibur bullet-jumped past Volt, over the cryopod then looped around behind a fence.

“You haven’t seen the Wolf before?”

“NO! HE HAS ALL THE HEALTH! WHY WON’T HE DIE?”

“Well this is a first for me as well.”

Volt shrugged, then turned his attention to the Wolf’s comrades. They all seemed rather pissed off and were throwing fire bombs everywhere. Dealing with them was probably a bigger priority, since the Wolf was preoccupied with trying to pulverize Excalibur. As long as Excalibur kept on running around though, he’d be completely fine.

The three Saturn Six prisoners on the other hand were angry too. They had just finished murdering an Ancient Healer and were looking for something else to set on fire. Volt, being bright yellow and sticking out like a sore thumb, looked like the perfect target.

Unfortunately for the first of the three prisoners though, they never managed to throw anything. A perfectly aimed shot from Volt’s Pyrana Prime, his new favourite hand cannon, incapacitated the prisoner. The other two, rather than running away, only got angrier.

“Oh, sorry…” Volt muttered. “Didn’t mean to piss you guys off. Don’t even know why we’re capturing you anyway…”

With two more precise shots from his Pyrana Prime, the two Saturn Six prisoners both collapsed, mere meters away from their friend. Volt checked that both Excalibur and the cryopod were still alive, then initiated the capture sequence, turning the prisoners into data and sending them off to be dealt with by the Tenno Council.

Now that the prisoners were dealt with, Volt turned his attention back to the Wolf. He hadn’t actually fought the Wolf before, but he didn’t seem too scary. After all, Excalibur was a Gold Initiate, but Volt was a Silver Sage, he was far more experienced and better prepared than Excalibur was, right?

Volt fired a shot at the Wolf, dragging his attention away from Excalibur. To Volt’s surprise, despite his bullets hitting dead centre, the Wolf hardly flinched.

“WAAAAAARRRRRRGHHHHH!” the Wolf howled, flinging his hammer at Volt. Volt rolled out of the way, then fired again.

Again, the Wolf hardly flinched.

“What the…” Volt didn’t finish his sentence. He didn’t get a chance to as the Wolf charged at him. Volt leaped out of the way, then jumped over the Wolf’s head, heading over to where Excalibur was hiding.

“YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN?” Excalibur cried as he showed his empty guns. “I emptied everything I have into him! Nothing! He’s still standing!”

“Yeah, I see what you mean. Here, take this…” Volt summoned three ammo pads for Excalibur and handed them to him. “Okay, I’ll keep him distracted while you keep an eye on the cryopod and get your ammo back. Then we can swap over, alright?”

Excalibur nodded. The Infested were all pretty much gone now, so all he didn’t need to worry too much. He actually felt a lot better now that Volt was here.

Volt on the other hand was feeling a little uneasy. He had already emptied three clips into the Wolf and that had only cut out about a fifth of the Wolf’s health. The Wolf on the other hand had barely reacted and was still charging at Volt as if nothing had happened.

Before long, Volt had emptied his entire ammo pool. He could have switched to his primary weapon, but Volt had mistakenly taken an unranked Glaxion. That hardly tickled enemies at the best of times.

“I, uh… see that you’re having trouble too…” Excalibur blinked as Volt dived behind cover next to him.

“Yeah, admittedly I kinda didn’t come prepared for all of this.”

Excalibur sighed. “So what do we do?”

Volt peered over their cover. The Wolf was very slowly making his way towards them. Above him though, there was a high up ledge…

“Okay, new plan! Follow me!” Volt shouted as he leaped out from behind cover and over the Wolf. “Get to that platform!”

Excalibur did as he was told, elegantly bullet-jumping over the Wolf and his flying hammer thing. He joined Volt up on the edge, hiding behind the Electric Shield Volt had placed.

“This is your plan?” Excalibur asked as they both opened fire on the Wolf. “To hide up here and shoot him?”

“Yep.”

Excalibur sighed, then continued to shoot.

After ten agonizing minutes, the Wolf’s health finally dropped. But he didn’t die though. Just like hundreds of Stalkers before him, the Wolf fell to his knees and disappeared, leaving nothing but a sparkling mod.

Immediately, Excalibur rushed over to the Wolf’s remains, only to get incredibly angry and throw his weapons down.

“MOLTEN IMPACT?” Excalibur roared. “IS THAT IT?”

Volt also looked rather upset. “Apparently… That’s worse than the Shadow Stalker…”

Excalibur took a deep breath, then threw the mod to one side. The mod bounced off the ground and into the head of the one remaining enemy, a single Infested Charger, killing it instantly.

The two Tenno stared at the corpse of the Charger, then sighed, just as an extraction team arrived.

“Well, guess we’re going to need to make more energy pads…” Volt tutted as the Tenno returned home.
