The door creaked open, echoing through the otherwise silent house. The lights were all off except for one on the clock in the kitchen space.
Psiksi tutted as he entered. He’d been meaning to grease the door hinges ages ago, but he’d never gotten around to it. His recent adventures with the Dessaron had dragged him away from home even longer than he’d intended, and the fact that the door was still creaky annoyed him slightly.
With a click of his tongue, a light by the door switched on. It was enough for Psiksi to remove his armour and weaponry and throw it all messily into the nearby chest. The rest of the house was also quite messy, but nowhere near as messy as Psiksi had originally left it. The second Psiksi was told that the Dessaron wanted him to replace their deceased ally, he had been so full of conflicting emotions that everything else had fallen by the wayside.
Even his partner.
The bedroom was empty. Psiksi knew that because the sofa was covered in blankets and pillows. Underneath it all was Psiksi’s closest friend Kass.
“Oh…” Kass threw a cushion off himself and sat up straight. His dark, purple eyes lit up as he saw Psikis. “OH! YOU’RE BACK!”
Psiksi smiled, then leaped into Kass’s pillow fort, hugging him tightly.
“I’m sorry.”
“First thing you say to me is that you’re sorry?” Kass beamed, hugging Psiksi back and playfully flicking his tail. “Dude, I wanted you to go and be an awesome Dessaron guy and now you are an awesome Dessaron guy! And now you’re MY Dessaron guy…” Kass buried himself in Psiksi’s arms, clinging to him now. “By the Void I missed you…”
“I missed you too, Kass… Ishould have come back sooner…” Psiksi sighed, then let go of Kass and made himself comfy. “Too much adventuring. And I didn’t tell you what I was doing and I probably worried you.”
“Nah…” Kass snuggled up next to Psiksi, then used his telekinesis to bring two drinks in from the kitchen. “I’ve just been keeping myself busy and drinking away my sorrow.”
“That makes me feel worse.”
Kass shrugged, yawned then fell silent. Psiksi looked him up and down. It was weird how they were together. Psiksi was almost designed from a young age to be a perfect warrior. Kass was a former accountant, the child of poor N-Class parents, who just happened to be really good at fighting and got himself transferred here.
Psiksi patted Kass on the head then took a sip of the drink he’d brought over. It was alcoholic. A fruity cocktail. He didn’t expect that.
“I’m so happy to be back…” Psiksi smiled.
“I’m so happy to have you back!” Kass perked up, putting an arm around Psiksi. “You’re… You’re not going away again, are you?”
“Not for at least a couple of weeks.”
“You got much other work to do?”
“Not really. I have to help General Retvik with some things the day after tomorrow but otherwise I’ve got a few days.”
“So… you’re free?” Kass asked.
“I am!” Psiksi nodded. “Why do you ask?”
Kass rummaged around underneath the blankets. Eventually, he pulled out a large bottle of mead and a pair of metal goblets.
“Want to get completely fucked up?”
Psiksi’s smile turned into a massive grin. “Fuck yeah.”
