Slowly Settling

Arkay groaned as he slipped from the sofa onto the floor, taking a moment to see what had been done. He had spent the last week slowly moving gear back and forth. Thankfully, he was still in one piece, although his lower back was quite sore, just above where his lower body armour ended.

“You alright, bro?”

Arkay glanced up at the being standing over him.

“Yeah, Teekay, I’m fine, I guess…” Arkay tutted. “Just tired. Also kinda mad at myself. I don’t think I have been pulling my weight.”

“Well, you haven’t really, but you’re frail and a bit unfit…”

“You mean really super unfit…” Arkay interrupted, tutting some more. “I get tired telekinetically moving boxes. What sort of former deity even am I?”

“Eh, it’s fine.” Teekay seemed not particularly bothered, but he was clearly exhausted. “We got everything moved, that is what’s important. I’ll sort out the last few things tomorrow and then we’re basically done.”

“It’s not fine. I need to do more!” Arkay protested slightly. “We should be doing things fifty fifty. Not what we are doing now.”

“I’ll say it again, it’s fine.” Teekay wandered over and sat down next to Arkay. “Seriously, you don’t need to worry about it. So what if I did most of the lifting, you did most of the cleaning of your old place. The whole fifty-fifty split isn’t something that we need to consider.”

“I… I guess…”

The two beings fell silent, before Arkay suddenly set up.

“Are we actually genetically related?”

“What do you mean?”

“I was told by Vikalos that I’d be living with you as a companion and a sibling but I don’t get it.”

“You don’t get how we’re related?”

Arkay nodded. “I remember being genetically related to an Elkay and a Veekay, but I wasn’t related to you in that universe. I think we even dated or something…”

“Our blood relationship comes from the universe prior.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“Were we siblings?”

“Yep. All six of us.”

Arkay leaned back, blinking in confusion. “We had six siblings back then as well?”

“Well, no…” Teekay frowned. “Back in that universe, we were test-tube babies made from the same base genetic structure, with DNA taken from the same being.”

“What being?” Arkay asked. “And how do you remember all of this stuff?”

Teekay hesitated, then fell silent. “I… Well, it’s… complicated. And you can’t really get it done any more.”

“So it was some sort of procedure?”

“Kinda, yeah. I’d freshly escaped from Kinisis’s previous universe and found myself asking questions. Too many questions. A Life Goddess offered me a chance to remember more of my past, and I naively said yes. I didn’t think she’d make me remember everything we ever did. Spent too long getting myself drunk in an attempt to forget, then ended up on a Deathven ship where some nice person fixed things for me. I’d tell you who but I don’t remember myself.”

“That sounds… utterly horrible…” Arkay almost whispered. “Does it… still bother you now?”

“Nah, nah, it’s all good now. I did my therapy and now I basically just chill out. I needed a roommate though, so I am glad to have you here.”

“It’ll take some getting used to, but I think I’ll like it here too!”

“Optimism, that’s more like it!” Teekay grinned. “Come on, lets sort out these last few boxes. Then we can order in some food.”

“Sounds like a plan!” Arkay smiled back as they got up off the sofa. “Sounds like a great plan!”
