A Little Forgetfulness

Arkay yawned and stretched his arms out as he woke up from his sleep. It took a moment for him to notice his surroundings, and for a second, he wasn’t sure where he was. But the little beam of light coming from the window swiftly reminded Arkay where he was. He was in his boyfriend’s house. He was staying there for just over a week. Just to see how things would go. And so far? It had been going quite well.

Twisting over, Arkay climbed out of bed, then went and opened the bedroom door. In the hallway, he immediately ran into Velas, the gentle giant that Arkay called his boyfriend. A large, canine-like being with fluffy black fur, neatly poured into smart trousers, a shirt and a jumper on top.

“Hey, you are awake!” Velas smiled.

“I am!” Arkay smiled back. “I overslept though, sorry.”

“Did you not sleep well?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Oh well, come and have some breakfast.”

Arkay grabbed a shawl and put it on before following Velas down the hallway into the kitchen and living room area. He watched as Velas toasted some bread, spread butter on it then added some cheese and ham onto it.

“Are you going to have your cereal?”

“Yeah, one sec…” Arkay snorted, realizing he needed to take his medication. He sorted himself out as quick as possible, then made his way towards the top cupboard, where he could only just reach the box of cereal he had brought up months ago. Thanks to a peg, it was all still sealed and not at all stale. He got a small bowl, tipped some cereal in, then closed the cupboard so he could open the fridge. A carton of milk was pulled out, drizzled into Arkay’s bowl then put back.

Velas watched, then went back to his own breakfast, switching between taking bites of bread and reading the local news on a small digital tablet. Arkay sat down next to him, spooning cereal into his maw.

“Anything happening?”

“No. Same old shit.”

“To be honest, that’s probably for the best.”

Velas shrugged. “No news is good news, yes?”

“Basically, yeah.”

Arkay trailed off, then stared somewhat blankly at his cereal. “This is nice.”

“What is nice?”

“Staying here with you.”

“I do like seeing you as I come back from work. Makes me happy.”

“I love seeing you come back from work too!” Arkay nodded in agreement.

“Heh…”

This time, they both trailed off, lost in their own thoughts. Eventually, Arkay spoke.

“What do you fancy for dinner tonight?”

“Hm. We can do that poultry thing. With the rice.”

“Ah, cool!” Arkay got up, having finished his small bowl of cereal, then made his way back to the fridge, getting out a packed of frozen poultry meat out of the freezer and placing it in the refrigerator below. He then swiftly sat back down at the table. “You got a busy day today?”

“Don’t know yet. I hope not.”

“Yeah, same…” Arkay shrugged, then chuckled. “Still, at least there’s me at the end of the day.”

“Haha, yes!” Velas finished his meal then got up, grabbing his nearby work bag. “I ought to get going.”

“No worries, see you this afternoon!” Arkay beamed.

“Yes, this afternoon!” Velas’s eyes lit up. “I can’t wait to get back.”

“Heh, me neither,” Arkay smiled some more. “Me neither…”
