A Call for Tahnahos

“Hi, is this Kinisis’s Guardian Ship?”

The voice on the other end caught Tahnahos off guard. He expected a deep, booming voice. Most of the Decay Lords that tried to contact them were gruff individuals, normally calling to politely ask Kinisis to move as they had detected something troubling nearby and were concerned about her safety. This voice though was… squeaky. And somewhat familiar.

“It is. This is Guardian Tahnahos speaking, who are you and what do you need?”

“Oh sweet, first try!” It seemed like the voice was also talking to someone else. “Hey, Ten- uh, Tahnahos, it’s Arkay. Now, before you do anything, I’m not calling to speak to Kinisis. I want to talk to you.”

“You want to talk to me? What about?” Tahnahos lowered his voice. Thankfully, Kinisis wasn’t around, but he still had to be quiet in case she could hear him. He knew all the calls to this ship were recorded anyway.

“I actually wanted to ask if you… remembered much about your pre-Divine Guardian life? Because Retvik, Elksia and I were considering having a get-together and it wouldn’t be the same without our old buddy Tenuk.”

“You… want to invite me?”

“Well yeah. You were one of the Dessaron too, mate.”

“I… I guess… Would you mind holding on a second, please?”

“Sure thing!”

Tahnahos put the line on hold. Taking the communicator with him, he left the main navigation room and headed to his personal quarters, where he kept one specific folder. The folder that Kinisis gave him about his previous life. Before he could probably scan through it though, a shadow loomed over him.

“Are you talking to my son?”

Kinisis wasn’t a tall being, but she was still taller than Tahnahos. She was thankfully dressed, wearing a starry robe with matching starry underwear.

“I… I am…” Tahnahos stuttered.

“You didn’t tell me.”

“If I told you, you’d interrupt, snatch the phone from me and Arkay would immediately hang up. Plus, he specifically said he wanted to talk to me.”

Kinisis kneeled down, so she could look Tahnahos in the eyes.

“He wanted to talk to you?”

“Yes. He called me Tenuk. Said I was part of a group called the Dessaron. He wants to meet up with me.”

The Life Goddess frowned, then tutted. “That is… a bit of a gut punch. He wants to see one of my Guardians but not his own mother.”

Tahnahos suddenly realised where this conversation was going. He immediately backed away, raising his arms in concern.

“Kinisis, please, I am begging you, don’t try and barge in and get in the way! Your son made an effort to contact me specifically and if you interfere, he’ll stop attempting to contact either of us! If we just let him be and let him make the decisions, he might make the decision to see you again!”

Kinisis shrugged, then smiled. “Very well. You’re absolutely right. And if he asks to meet up, I’ll let you go. On one condition.”

Tahnahos sighed. “What condition?”

“I want a report of how he’s doing. Whether he’s happy and making new friends. Stuff like that.”

“Very well… But I need to get back to this call before he hangs up…”

Tahnahos rooted through the folder he had initially been looking for, still sighing. When he had found what he wanted, he took the call off hold, aware that Kinisis was still watching him.

“Is everything alright? You were gone for a while. I was considering giving up and calling back later!” the voice on the other end chirped.

“Everything is fine…” Tahnahos replied as calmly as he could. “Sorry about that, I was… required for something.”

“That’s fine. I know first-hand that some people can be troublesome. You still want to join our get-together?”

Tahnahos perked up a little. “Sure thing. Who’s hosting it?”

“We’re going to Elksia’s place. She’s got an attic we can stay in!”

“What time?”

“Uh… haven’t decided yet. We wanted to make sure you were in first. I’ll get Retvik to call you back when we have a time and date, is that alright?”

“That’s fine. It’s good talking to you, Arkay…”

“Yeah! I’ll leave you to it, sorry for disturbing work!”

“No problem…” Tahnahos sighed. “Stay safe…”

With a tut, Tahnahos closed the call and slumped on the nearest chair. He glanced back at Kinisis, who seemed satisfied.

“Please don’t crash this little party… It’ll make everything worse.”

“Oh, don’t worry, I won’t!” Kinisis beamed as she pranced out of the room. “Just make sure you get that report done.”

“Yes, Mistress…” Tahnahos groaned as the door slammed shut. “Of course…”
