Above a Burning Castle

“You, uh, missed a spot…”

“Huh, thanks…”

Yisini watched anxiously as Kairos flew around the gargantuan castle, setting it ablaze and incinerating anything that desperately tried to escape. Kairos wasn’t really that aware of Yisini’s presence, he was busy working. What he was working on, Yisini wasn’t sure but she didn’t want to ask either.

After another fiery flyby, Kairos returned, swooping over Yisini before spinning round and perching on a nearby cliff, admiring his work. He watched the fires burn, smiling to himself.

“That seems…” Yisini hesitated, not wanting to comment. “That was all very… harsh. Why did you burn down that unique Vohran nest? I mean, they don’t normally build castles…”

Kairos shrugged. “Yeah, shame that I had to kill them, to be honest. But I had no choice.”

“Why?”

“Well, you know the problems I have when people try to meddle with time…” Kairos tucked his wings away, perching happily. He really didn’t seem bothered at all by the destruction he had caused.

“I don’t…”

“They were building a time machine, sister. Can’t have that. Too dangerous!”

“But you could have asked them to stop!” Yisini protested. “You just slaughtered them!”

The Whenvern turned to the Allbirther, eyeing her curiously. “You normally don’t care THAT much about things I kill… What’s gotten into you today? Actually, what has gotten into you lately? You’ve been acting odd ever since Arkadin disappeared.”

Yisini sighed, not wanting to admit the truth. She had originally believed she’d be fine without her brother’s existence, but she… missed him. In a way. And she had things she needed to know that only Arkadin knew about.

“I don’t know…”

“You sure about that, or do you just-”

“I don’t want to tell you. Not since you just burnt this lovely castle to the ground!”

Kairos glanced back at the castle. Lovely was the last word he would have used to describe it. The monstrosity had been awkwardly carved into a mountain and in the messiest way possible.

“Well, maybe they shouldn’t have been building a time machine? I wouldn’t have had a problem if they weren’t trying to build time-altering apparatus!”

“What is your-”

Kairos snapped his claws, immediately interrupting Yisini. “You have NO idea how dangerous meddling with time is! One single past change and poof, you could do irreparable damage to yourself AND the lives of those around you! It’s insanely difficult fixing these things as I have to basically untangle a huge web of actions and interactions and frankly it’s easier just to blow everything up and start again!”

“Did they-”

“No. They didn’t. But I don’t want to risk any sort of thing like that!” Kairos tutted to himself. “Better safe than sorry.”

“But…”

Kairos glared at Yisini. “Are you telling me how to do my job?”

“You murdered that whole nest.”

“So? You murder things all the time! What with your illnesses and predatory food chains and stuff like that!”

Yisini sighed, curling up into a ball. “Don’t be mean to me…”

The Whenvern unfurled his might wings, flapping them menacingly. Yisini coiled herself up further, feeling threatened.

“Then don’t be a damn hypocrite!” Kairos shouted as he flew off. “And stop being a damn baby!”
