Bruised Wings

“Why do you always return home looking like you were dragged through multiple bushes?” Sini asked as the front door blew open a tattered Thraki wandered inside.

“Generally because I have been dragged through multiple bushes, as well as other things. Like trees and stuff…” Voltiidro grunted, sitting down awkwardly on a chair that was too small for him. Sini was washing dishes and the splashing of water was somewhat soothing. “The other Thraki all hate me. I hate them.”

Sini shrugged, rinsing off some plates and putting them aside to dry. “Have you tried not being a pompous asshole?”

Voltiidro tutted. “I am not a pompous asshole. They are. They won’t believe who I am. They dismiss me as if I am some common little lizard.”

“That’s because you are!” Sini beamed. She finished off the last few dishes then wandered over to the fridge, grabbing a small glass of milk for herself and a bottle of water for Voltiidro, which she emptied into a large bowl. “You have an ego about the size of the average star and look down on most beings that aren’t special. I know you do because I do it too!”

Sini placed the bowl in front of Voltiidro, who began to lap it up with his long tongue. He was pissed off but wanted to consider his words before retaliating.

“I mean, that’s the whole point of Kinisis making us mortal in the first place, isn’t it?” Sini smiled. “She wants us to treat mortals with respect! Or at least a bit more respect. Because if I’m honest, we do kinda treat mortals as if they are expendable.”

“I DO NOT!” Voltiidro shouted, nearly knocking his bowl over. “They are not expendable! Beneath me, sure, but not expendable! Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

Voltiidro grunted. “There are definitely some mortals who are expendable.”

“That and your whole being superior to everyone is part of why Kinisis put us here!” Sini continued on with her trail of thought. “She wants us to understand what it’s like. And I’ve learnt a lot over the last few days!”

The Thraki grunted some more, tucking his wings underneath himself. He was pretty bruised and battered from today’s conflicts, having argued with a Thraki leader. He couldn’t quite remember why. But Voltiidro was pretty certain that neither of them had been victorious.

“So what about Arkay and Ebania? What about them? Ebania is just as aloof as I am and she is not suffering how I am!”

“Ebania is enjoying herself, she found a job and is working hard! And I may have had a bad time with Timik, but I learned a few valuable things! Like how he completely fooled me yet was both correct and is almost as attractive as I am!”

“Yeah but…” Voltiidro hissed, lowing his voice. “Kinisis… hasn’t claimed us back yet… We’re all still here. You’ve been humbled, Ebania’s been humbled. Arkay was already humble. But Kinisis is still punishing you three.”

Sini shook her head. “I guess you’re right, but none of us know what Kinisis is thinking…”

The Temthan’s words were interrupted by a bashing on the door. Ebania was standing there, soaking wet, trying to catch her breath. “HAVE EITHER OF YOU SEEN ARKAY?”

Voltiidro and Sini glanced at each other. The Thraki shrugged, while the Temthan chuckled.

“I can’t FIND him!” Ebani gasped. “He was supposed to meet with… Why are you laughing?”

“He’s right behind you!” Sini grinned.

Ebania turned around, but as she did so, her tail bashed into something. She quickly realised she had knocked Arkay to the ground with her massive tail fin. And she’d knocked him out completely.

“Oh piss…” Ebania finally muttered, as Sini helped her drag Arkay inside.
