Letter from the Lotus

Volt stared blankly at the console in front of him, his multiple eyes scanning the message he had just received. By his side was his trusty Kuva Bramma and Zaw Rapier, the two weapons that had managed to get him through the True Mastery Test. The message in question was clearly an automated message, one that had been prepared far in advance. But as Volt read and reread it, he couldn’t help but get emotional.

“You have passed my final test, to attain the rank of True Master.”

The message had been written by the Lotus, mentioning how proud she was. How she had watched, ever since she first awoken Volt, watching him progress. How Volt had somehow managed to conquer everything that had been thrown his way. Now, after a gruelling final test of survival, he had learned everything the Lotus had to offer. Plus a bit more.

But this message felt hollow. Not because the words within it were insincere. Volt knew that, when this message was written, it had been truly genuine. The Lotus had been aware from the start that some of her Tenno would become insanely powerful. But the Lotus could not have known about her turbulent future, could she? Had she seen the reappearance of her father, Hunhow? Or the mind-altering of Ballas, who claimed to be her partner? Had the Lotus intended to revert into the being known as Natah?

Volt had no answers. All he had was vague speculation, visions that made no sense. He had dreamed of what had happened to the Lotus, the being who had awoken him and countless other Tenno. But those dreams had made no sense, despite how real they felt. Had the Lotus really switched sides, simply by Ballas’s touch? Or had she been forcibly changed?

With a sigh, Volt read the message one last time, particularly the attachments to the message. The Lotus had left the True Master with one last gift. A handful of Umbral Forma, rare Orokin modifications that Volt could equip to make himself even stronger. He would probably never use them, mostly because, well, he hadn’t needed them all this time, why would he need them now?

As Volt put the Umbral Forma in a safe place, another message dropped into his inbox.

“Congratulations. Today I treat you as an equal.”

This message was from Teshin. It took Volt a moment to remember who Teshin was. The Dax Warrior that Volt had helped save from the Grineer Twin Queens. Someone still bound to the Orokin ways, and spent way too much time trying to convince Tenno to train by fighting each other in friendly combat. Teshin wasn’t by any means a bad person, just an old fashioned one. He meant well.

“This is a fine day for us all. Because of your True Mastery, you may now use the True Master Fonts in relays, to bless other Tenno present. Fortify them so that they too may follow your path in mastery.”

Attached was a small diagram with some instructions on it. Volt read them carefully, before realising what they meant. With the True Master Fonts, Volt could share some of his True Master knowledge with others, helping them earn more credits, more resources and more affinity. All he had to do was go to a relay and press a couple of buttons.

“Right!” Volt clapped his hands together with glee, setting course for Larunda, the nearest and often busiest relay. “Time to help some newbies!”
