The Great Library stands on a great hill overlooking the equally great city of Thre-Vretania. It is a large, marble and glass building, rectangular in shape, with a large glass dome on the roof. Its innards are lined with a millennium’s worth of history and paperwork, neatly organized by the renowned Θ-Class Ksa. Within the glass dome resides the Great Keeper of the Great Library, who dedicates his life to keeping both the Library and Rethan Society organized and written down.
During his time as Keeper, Veeksiar had seen a lot of things happen, but having witnessed the assassination of the Vice General first hand, he couldn’t help but admit that he was feeling shaken. If someone could have Elkay Theanon, the powerful Threan-type warrior that he was, killed off in such a gruesome way, then perhaps Veeksiar was next? He knew it wasn’t his job, but Veeksiar needed to get to the bottom of this case, find out who did all this. He didn’t want to be thrown out of a building.
But Veeksiar’s sense of dread only worsened when he arrived at his home. His Ksa had left him in the main hall while they returned to normal duty. The entrance to the Glass Dome was open. He had ordered that it be closed unless he was around. His personal team of Ksa were normally much better than this. The 10th generation of the Θ-Class were a huge step up from other teams. Faster, stronger, but more importantly, vastly more intelligent. They had made Veeksiar’s job much easier for the last 15 years they’d been working for him.
With a hint of panic in his mind, Veeksiar grabbed the first Ksa he could find. Seth was standing by a book case, dusting it off.
“Ser, are you well?” Seth asked. “Did your meeting go well?”
Veeksiar shook his head. “No, not at all. Rather than follow standard procedure and let me stand as Vice General until the next election, Photeianos chose that skylo-headed Emthion. Why is the door to the Glass Dome open?”
Seth spun round to look at the door. “Ohhh. Nenth is in there. Looking for something.”
“Nenth? I gave him the week off to celebrate his third anniversary with his partner!” Veeksiar tutted. “Why does he insist on working when I tell him not to?”
“Ser, something happened. Arksi was arrested,” Seth explained. “Nenth is looking for-”
“Arrested? Why the hell was Arksi arrested?” Veeksiar shouted as he stomped into the Glass Room. “Nenth, what happened to your little boyfriend?”
Nenth, dressed in his most elegant armour, pulled his head out of a dusty cardboard box. He was clearly not in standard armour, more ready to go out to a fancy restaurant. The sort of thing Veeksiar never enjoyed, but eh, Nenth seemed to like it.
“Ser! They arrested Arksi! The R-Class and the Astynom! Accused him of murdering the Vice General! They’ve thrown him and all the other K-Class guys into the Kryan Catacombs without trial!”
Veeksiar blinked. “… Really?”
“Really, ser.”
“Y-yes. He called me because he was running late. General Elkay had given him the week off as well. We were talking on our communicators and I heard everything! I recorded it all! That’s why I was here! Looking for documentation on the laws that stop this happening!”
Veeksiar could see that his favourite Ksa was clearly upset. But what annoyed him more was that the High General had lied to him. Again. He put an arm around Nenth in a vague attempt to comfort him.
“Ser, Veeksiar, I can’t lose Arksi. I can’t live without him…” Nenth whimpered. “It’s…”
“Injustice…” Veeksiar sighed. “I hate injustice… It is not my job to ensure that Rethans get fair trials, but this is an extreme case. Nenth, you will have all the help we can get.”
“Really, ser?”
“Yes!” Veeksiar bowed his head and pulled Nenth close. “I swear to you, my beloved Ksa, we will make this right.”
