I can’t sleep.
In a house full of decadence and material desires, I can’t sleep. There is a constant gnawing sensation in the back of my mind, like someone trying to get in. On top of the banging outside, I’m amazed I’ve managed to sleep at all. Psivee-En keeps on insisting that I am safe here, but I feel anything but. There’s nowhere to run, only places to hide.
As I turn over, Psivee-En notices that I’m awake. I don’t think he has slept since we arrived here a few days ago. He was standing by the door, axe in hand, staring out the lone window, but now he’s turned to face me.
“Can’t sleep?”
“Clearly.”
I am still bewildered by the situation I am currently in. The fact that I am being pursued by a monster of a Rethan who wants to use my body in some sick experiment to create a kid of his own is insane enough, it’s beyond insanity when my only hope appears to be the monster who ruined my life all those years ago. I may have forgiven him, he may have redeemed himself, but I will always be weary.
“You should try go back to sleep. I have som-”
“No. No drugs. No nothing. I’d rather be awake.”
“Very well.”
I shouldn’t have snapped. But I am jumpy and uncertain. The banging outside suddenly gets louder and Psivee-En decides he needs to go and check it out.
“I don’t need to tell you to stay here now, do I?”
“No.”
Psivee-En leaves, locking the door behind him, then raising a collection of magical shields around the house. I head over to the window and watch him tentatively check the area. I can see the enemy, the monster from here, bashing at the furthest shields with his staff. The monster pauses to speak to Psivee-En, then causes some sort of explosion, throwing them both back. The shields though remain intact.
Psivee-En skids to a halt and I hear him thud against the door.
“Are you alright?” I ask.
“Yes. Went better than I thought.”
I sigh. “How do you mean?”
“Well he only threatened to tear my head off and capture you and torture you, rather than his normal messages of sadistic experimentation, rape and death… Hang on… SHIT!”
The shields suddenly go down, and the monster charges towards our home. Psivee-En only just manages to dodge away from the monster’s spear, but the monster wants me, not him. I use my telekinisis to push the monster away, then scramble for my weapons.
“Stay in there!” Psivee-En barks. Of course I’m staying in here. The house is built into the cliff, but the front isn’t. I start barricading the entrance with anything and everything, leaving just a small hole for me to see though.
Outside, Psivee-En has grabbed the monster and is pulling him away from the house, but he’s barely doing so. The monster somehow manages to throw him over his shoulder, and is already back on his feet. Again, I blast him away with telekinisis, but this time he doesn’t go nearly as far and is upright in an instant. I try again. Nothing. My telekinisis is doing nothing to him.
Thankfully Psivee-En is still fighting. He’s doing everything he can, and the monster is throwing everything it can at him. That’s when I see it.
“BEHIND YOU!” I scream. But I’m too late. The monster’s spear goes through Psivee-En’s stomach. He impales him on the wall behind them and laughs, turning to me.
I grab my crossbow in one hand, and ready a fire spell in the other.
The monster tears through the wall as if it’s made of paper. I pour flames onto him, he barely acts. I fire bolts into him. One of them goes through his neck, the other three embed themselves in his stomach. A fifth dart goes straight through his calf and he doesn’t even stumble. I start using my voice-magic, screaming mystic words of fire, ice and air at him. He walks through all of it.
“WHY WON’T YOU DIE? JUST FUCK OFF AND DIE!” I shout, pretending to not be afraid. It doesn’t work.
The monster smiles at me. I attack him with tooth and claw. Nothing. NOTHING.
His claws are around my throat. I keep on clawing at him. I throw everything I’ve got at him. Anything to get him off me.
He’s squeezing my throat.
Claws crushing me.
I can’t breathe!
get him off me
