Study on Feral Threan-Types

This was supposed to be an isolated prison area. As part of my duties as a Lanex, I have been observing this little valley ever since the Feralheart Plague started a few days ago. It acts so amazingly fast, I am relieved to not be affected by it.

The main focus of the valley is the large lake at the end of it. Carved into the cliff side above it is a large, formerly sealed off cell, large enough for seven Standard-type Rethans. Its current occupants though were thirteen Threan-type Rethans, unlucky victims of the overall populace’s selective racism. They were guarded by twenty guards of various types, all of which were quickly infected and fled when the plague arrived. Since the cell was not hermetically sealed, the sickness slipped in. Although the prisoners were outnumbered, they quickly overran their captors, driving them down the river before giving up the chase and killing anything else that moved.

Thankfully, there is little other life in this valley.

The group though has already reformed and is acting like a pack of wild Thanatians. They originally fought a lot, tearing into both each other and their prey, constantly vying for power. The strongest two of the group, a gun metal and blue Rethan and a black, silver and purple one, both ceased their fighting two days ago, with the black and purple Rethan coming out on top. With a leader decided, they seemed to break down into smaller groups, both pairing up, possibly as mates, and for specific duties.

The physically stronger ones do most of the hunting, splitting into two groups. The remainder, alongside one of the stronger members, will remain at home, cleaning, resting or playing with one another. Several of the between-strengths beings will occasionally go hunting too, following the main hunters and assisting in taking down larger prey, or trailing behind them and catching smaller critters, mostly lizards and small mammals.

Surprisingly, these feral Threan-types do occasionally take the time to heat and preserve food. Larger creatures are torn apart and eaten in bits, with the remains being placed in a large container of water, boiling over a fire that is maintained during daytime hours only. At night, the fire is put out and the feral Rethans huddle together for warmth, with the alpha of the group keeping those most loyal closest to him. He seems to have a particular interest in a middling yellow and black Rethan, but also keeps an ice blue Rethan and a green and gun metal Rethan close too.

While they are incredibly aggressive, the aggression comes from being defensive. They fiercely protect their territory, and the former guards have not dared come back. I have managed to keep myself out of their way, but other, less responsible Lanex have ended up injured as they get too close.

Most worryingly, while many beings I have witnessed lose most of their intelligence, a common theme I’ve seen in feral Threan-type Retha is that they do keep a lot of their strengths, and lose some of their weaknesses. The worst part is that although their telekinisis disappears completely, their telepathy remains in a low-level state. This means that they can keep track of each others’ presence, but also detect and track enemies over considerable distances. I have not seen this in action as of yet, normally they catch their prey before it manages to run too far, and they always do so quickly. Should they decide something is worthy of the chase, there appears to be no escape, apart from outnumbering and overpowering them.
