Happy Day

Arkay yawned as he turned over in bed. He’d just heard a beeping noise coming from his communicator and it had stirred him from his slumber. It was probably for the best though, as it was 11am and Arkay had meant to get up earlier.

With another yawn, Arkay reached for his communicator and flicked open so he could see the little screen.

“Happy deathday, Arkay!” was what the message said. The message took a while to sink in, mostly due to Arkay’s tiredness.

“Oh. Yeah. That’s today.”

With yet another yawn, Arkay crawled his way out of bed and on to his legs. He looked around the room briefly, before opening his bedroom door. Not only was he sleepy, but he was hungry and thirsty too. Before he did anything else though, he checked that message to see who it was from. Weirdly, it was from Litvir, probably one of the last people Arkay expected to see.

“Thank you, mate!” Arkay typed back. “How did you know?”

“Well, I have been keeping track,” Litvir immediately replied. “Relkir, Teekay and Eksi all say hi.”

Arkay paused. “Wait, you’re with Teekay now?”

“Yes. The four of us are working with Kinisis on her little oasis.”

“Oh. Neat!” Arkay typed back. “Is it good work?”

“A bit boring, but mostly fine. I cannot complain. How about you? We have heard hardly anything from you.”

Arkay thought to himself as he left his bedroom and made his way into the kitchen. However, as he entered, he spotted Kallis sitting on the washing machine, holding a cake.

“Happy birthday!” Kallis beamed. “I got you a cake! I don’t know what sort of cake it is, but it looks nice!”

Kallis was right. The cake, protected by a plastic container, was in the shape of a ring, covered in white icing, with streaks of chocolate running across it. On one side was a spike of chocolate, imitating a candle.

“That is a cake and a half…” Arkay was rather amazed. “Where did you get it?”

“Down the road, funnily enough!” Kallis grinned. “You want some?”

“I haven’t even had breakfast yet!” Arkay protested slightly. “I can’t…”

“You can’t have cake for breakfast?”

“Actually, now I think about it, I can have cake for breakfast. And no one can stop me.” Arkay grabbed some plates, while Kallis grabbed a knife and cut two large slices of cake. Kallis dumped the larger slice on Arkay’s plate, then handed him a spoon.

“It looks nice.”

“It IS nice!” Arkay shovelled a spoonful of cake into his mouth. The cake was rather rich, and inside it were swirls of chocolate and vanilla flavoured sponge. Before long, both Arkay and Kallis had finished their slices.

“I kinda want more…” Kallis groaned. “But that was filling. And I don’t want to spoil dinner or anything…”

“Yeah…” Arkay nodded in agreement. “Don’t want to- wait, what do you mean by spoiling dinner?”

Kallis beamed again. He got up from the kitchen counter and headed to the fridge, which he hastily opened. After a bit of rummaging around, Kallis pulled out two plastic packages.

“I got sausages for you. Lots of sausages!”

“Wow, I love sausages!” Arkay exclaimed. “How did you… Wait, of course you know. We’ve been living together for a while now.”

“Yep. I wanted to get you all your favourite foods for your birthday!”

Arkay smiled, then gave Kallis a little hug.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Happy birthday!”
