All-Ksa’s Partner

“Hi!”

Kenon stared at the strange little being standing in the doorway. It was clearly a Skyavok, but it was also clearly disabled, leaning on a pair of crutches despite having seemingly working legs. As Kenono scanned the being’s physical integrity though, he became suspicious. Mental trauma, not so much physical trauma, was causing this plight.

“You gonna just stand there, or do you want to come in?”

The Void Lord tutted, then straightened himself out. “I must have the wrong address.”

“Pretty sure you got the right address, actually!” the Skyavok beamed, awkwardly stepping to one side. “Come in! Kayel’s still busy but he’ll be here in…uh… some time. He is doing a brunch with a bunch of school kids and the kids stuff always somewhat relaxing for him, so he takes his time. But you can come in and wait here, if you want!”

Kenon did as he was asked, stepping into the small apartment. Considering that this was supposedly the home of the All-Ksa of the Skyavok, it was far, far too modest. No statues, no paintings and not a single flake of gold to be seen. Basic wooden furniture, a small sofa and a kitchen on one side. A bathroom hidden in the corner and a sorry excuse for a bed in the other. The Skyavok moved to one side and gently pushed the door shut, but didn’t close it all the way, before hobbling over to the main wooden table and sitting down.

“Who are you?” Kenon asked, not sure what to make of this Skyan.

“That’s a weird question to ask, Void Lord Kenon…” the Skyan retorted. “You came to Kayel’s home to see Kayel and didn’t expect to see me?”

“All-Ksa Kayel never mentioned family.”

The Skyan smiled. “That doesn’t surprise me. Kayel’s very over-protective of his dear partner.”

“You are his partner?”

“Yes! Veeyel’s the name! Married for… goodness knows how long! What brings you in person to our humble abode?”

Kenon grunted, still eyeing Veeyel suspiciously. “Hm. I hope you do not mind me asking, but you to not appear to be in the healthiest of conditions…”

Veeyel shrugged as he made his way to the kitchen, where he was clearly cooking something in a large cauldron. “Well, things happen! Or rather, things happened in the past. Don’t really remember. Buildings falling on your head tend to do that to you.”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh, nothing much. Saved a bunch of people, permanently crippled. Things happen!” Veeyel paused, then turned to Kenon, a blank expression on his face. “Are you here to see Kayel?”

“Yes.”

“He’s out right now. Doing a brunch with school kids.”

“You already informed me of this.”

Veeyel shrugged. “Oh well. I informed you twice. You staying for lunch? I’ve made way too much, as always.”

“You are offering me food?” Kenon nearly smirked, but held himself back. “You have barely anything.”

“I have enough to feed myself and Kayel. And you too, if you wish.”

“You do not-”

“Yeah I do. Treat everyone how you’d like to be treated yourself. That’s how I live my life. You may be a mean old void creature but that doesn’t mean I should treat you poorly or not offer to feed you! What do deities of nothingness eat anyway?” Veeyel blinked, then went back to cooking. “Why do you want to speak to Kayel anyway? Don’t you Rethans have phones?”

Kenon sighed. “I was going to make a small peace offering and wanted to do so in person.”

“Oh, that’s nice!” Veeyel smiled. “Well, sit tight for a bit, I’m sure Kayel will be here soon…”
